DEFINITION: Primary work assignment to perform trash and or recycling route collection. This position will also perform a wide variety of skilled technical duties related to the operation of the City’s solid waste and recycle programs. Direct supervision is provided by PWNR Operations Division work area Supervisor or Manager. The PWNR Department provides essential transportation and utility services within the City. Employees may be assigned temporarily to other Divisions to assist with special and/or emergency projects.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Collect solid waste refuse and recyclables with fully automated and semi-automated trucks on assigned routes and special and non-routine refuse collection as assigned. Service containers on residential property and public right of ways. Assemble, repair, and deliver collection containers. Transport collected refuse to a designated sanitary landfill disposal site. Identify maintenance or repair needs on assigned equipment. Perform routine service on assigned vehicle and equipment. Maintain daily activity records and maintenance logs as required, including use of work management systems for computerized data and work management. Respond to public contacts in a courteous and professional manner. Perform work in a safe manner and comply with pertinent safety standards and procedures, traffic laws, and traffic control methods. Train less experienced personnel. Research technical problems using vendor manuals and internet searches. Critically analyze operations and equipment performance and implement effective responses. Assist with development of standard operating procedures and checklists. Assist contractors and City approved service providers with operation, maintenance and constructions projects as assigned. Perform snow and ice removal; operate sanding, liquid distribution trucks and snow blower operation. Respond to inquiries from customers regarding the full range of duties and the corresponding city, dept. or division policy or work practice. Operate a variety of tools and equipment ranging from small hand tools to heavy equipment. May assist with utility maintenance projects and operations as assigned.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed outside and inside both night and day shifts, under varying and extreme weather conditions. Work includes exposure to noise, dust, gases and oils, solvents and chemicals. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body is needed. Position requires the ability to work under time constraints and in confined spaces and the use of respirators. The candidate for this position must be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to do the job.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade plus one year of experience performing sanitation operations, street maintenance, or closely related work. Requires possession of a Class “A” Colorado CDL with either “N” Tanker and/or Double/Triple Trailers endorsements. Selection process will include complete job description review, personal interview, background investigation, criminal background check, physical abilities test, and substance screening. CDL holders will be required to complete the FMCSR disclosure form.
