|DEFINITION: Under the general supervision of the Recreation Aquatic Supervisor, develop, coordinate, and implement a Middle School after school program. Work in partnership with staff to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate after school programs, outdoor recreation, special events and general youth programs.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Effectively works with adolescents from diverse backgrounds. Plan, supervise and evaluate the operation of the Middle School after school program. In conjunction with the after school program plan and implement intramural programs, outdoor recreation activities and special events. Promote programs using a variety of media venues such as schools, newsletters, news releases, flyers and web sites. Ensure that all programs are offered in a safe and fun environment. Seeks and encourages input from youth in planning and involves youth in planning and implementing suggestions. Collaborates with other division staff, City departments, and community agencies to develop and coordinate new and ongoing programs and services. Works effectively and in a collaborative spirit with co-workers to provide exemplary customer service to the public. Works cooperatively and in a leadership role with other community/school based agency/organizations to combine resources and maximize results for Longmont youth and their families. Provide ongoing communication with parents/guardians through letters, phone calls, and meetings. Functions in lead worker role with temporary staff.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work involves exposure to noise on a regular basis. Work is performed outside supervising outdoor activities and transporting youth as well as indoors in a standard office environment. Work requires communicating with youth and others, writing reports, exposure to noise, and working closely with others. Work requires visual and physical capabilities to work on computers and associated equipment and to operate passenger vehicles frequently or for prolonged periods of time. Work requires performing multiple concurrent tasks, problem solving, reasoning, maintaining confidentiality, and constant contact with youth.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and education equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, leisure studies, child development, psychology, sociology, social work, or a related field. Two years experience working with youth in planning and implementing programs required. Experience organizing team sports and general recreation activities is highly desired. Valid Colorado driver’s license required.
