|DEFINITION: Perform skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground fiber optic broadband systems.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Perform fiber splicing on both overhead and underground fiber optic systems. Perform fiber optic cable terminations in patch panels or at the customer’s premise. Operate a variety of specialized equipment including the aerial bucket truck and trenchers. Install communication racks and associated fiber optic equipment including chassis, power supplies, patch panels, splitter cabinets, and wireless communication equipment. Respond to, troubleshoot, and repair customer outages that may occur at any hour of the day/night on both the overhead and underground fiber optic systems utilizing fiber optic test equipment, such as an optical time domain reflectometer. Perform manual labor to construct and install telecommunication lines including climbing poles, structures and ladders, digging holes and trenches, laying conduit, attaching cables to poles, and stringing and laying cables. Install fiber optic overhead and underground service drops.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The candidate for this position must be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to do the job. This may include frequently sitting for long periods of time during splicing operations on underground fiber system; standing for long periods of time during splicing operations in a bucket truck; reaching, twisting, squatting, kneeling when working on underground fiber optic system, including opening vault lids, pushing and pulling fiber optic cables, working in and around telecom rack equipment. Occasional shoveling and climbing ladders.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade and preferably five years of experience working in the telecommunication industry splicing fiber and performing broadband network technician duties. Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid Colorado Driver’s License.
