DEFINITION: Perform a wide variety of complex, technical tasks in the analysis, design, testing, installation, integration and maintenance of fiber, Ethernet and wireless based commercial, wide area and local area networks, data communications configurations and hardware and software systems. Configure, manage and operate a wide variety of network and computer equipment as required to support Longmont Power & Communications Broadband Services.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Perform extensive design, configuration, deployment, management, maintenance and troubleshooting in GPON and Active Ethernet fiber switching technologies, OLTs, ONTs, various wireless technologies including but not limited to WiFi, WiMax and PTP Microwave, Cisco and other routing technologies and operating systems including but not limited to Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. Serve as a liaison with outside vendors on technical issues relating to networking equipment, servers and connectivity regarding hardware and software requirements. Resolve network, server, or service related impairments or outages. Review and research complex problems relating to network installation, development, and integration. Ensure troubleshooting and problem solving tasks delegated to network and customer care staff to assure timely resolution. Participate in an on-call rotation to support the network operations center. Documentation of all new and existing logical and physical networks and infrastructure. Review and monitor network standards and testing procedures produced by network contractors, vendors and staff for quality control.
Knowledge of or experience with IT infrastructures such as LAN, WAN, VPNs, and Firewalls; OSS/BSS, EMS and NMS systems; network ticketing system concepts and/or experience; network management systems such as Nagios, Solarwinds, Cacti, OpenNMS; working Network Operations Center (NOC) environment experience; comfortable working in Linux server environment; basic scripting experience in BASH, perl, python; protocols, services, and concepts such as DHCP, SNMP, RADIUS, SYSLOG, SSH, FTP/TFTP/FTP, Iptables, VLANs, VPNs, BGP, OSPF; and ability to document networks and create diagrams using software such as Microsoft Visio.
Ability to deploy a variety of connectivity methods including fiber, twisted pair, and wireless; research networking connectivity, hardware and software requirements, and development technical specifications; and assist in information systems analyses and feasibility studies.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is generally performed in a standard office environment as well as field work in the deployment of commercial networking equipment. Work requires problem solving skills, frequent reading, reasoning, customer contact, multiple concurrent tasks, and constant interruptions. Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing. Work must be done while working closely with others, including both co-workers and users. Frequent light lifting and carrying (up to 50 Lbs.), pulling, pushing, reaching, walking, standing, and bending/stooping. Occasional sitting, climbing, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and driving. Requires the ability to use dexterity and a full range of hand and arm motions during installation activities. Periodic travel to other City departments.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and education equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college with major course work in computer science, networking or a closely related field plus 2 to 5 years’ experience as a network engineer, systems engineer, or working in a network operations environment. Special Qualifications: Possession of valid Colorado Driver’s License is required. Ability to respond to regular “on-call” shifts within an established timeframe of 20-30 minutes. Completion of CCNA, CCNP, or related Certified Network Engineer program is desirable.
